PERSONALITY
Maka Albarn is a girl who is just like every other... but also so much more. Generally, she is friendly and happy. She likes being around her friends and enjoys hanging out. She is very simple in her pleasures, finding enjoyment in the most basics of things.
Maka is in possession of an understanding and forgiving heart. And she does not know how to be disloyal to save her life. She is the type of girl that gives her trust and loyalty for life, and even if you betray that trust and loyalty she will work on saving you and getting her friend back. Maka just doesn't know how to give up.
Maka is also one of the most courageous people in her world. She faces her fear head-on, not letting it rule her, but using it to not only make her a better person, but a better fighter. You could never call her reckless, as her personality gives a clear distinction between being courageous and being reckless.
She also has a strict, yet flexible, moral code. Though 'flexible' only in the sense that there are many 'clauses' for many different sets of circumstances. She could not ever be called rigid, but to just see her, talk to her, you can see that she does indeed have her own code of conduct. A lot of her codes deal with men, brought on by the mistrust born in her as she witnessed her father cheating on her mother through the first thirteen years of their marriage (and her life), ending in a divorce. To this date, it still takes Maka a lot to completely trust men, and so far there are only three that have gained this trust (Soul Eater [Evans], Death the Kid and Black Star).

HISTORY
When Maka Albarn was born it was into an unusual type of family situation. Her mother was in her twenties, while her father was just eighteen years old. What made the family even more unique was the fact Maka's mother was a top weapon Meister for the DWMA (Death Weapon Meister Academy), and her father, while young, was already made into a Death Scythe and was Lord Death's personal weapon.
Growing up, Maka adored her father and idolized her mother, as it was her mother that had turned her father into a Death Scythe; at which point he had dropped his name of birth (Spirit), and became known as Death Scythe. It would be her young, essentially stay-at-home, father who would instill Maka with her love of reading. Some of Maka's fondest memories with her papa were of him reading books to her throughout her childhood. However, these memories were among the only fond ones, as she realized at a young age that her father was far from perfect.
It was as a young child of around five or six years old that she began to catch on to something being wrong. It wasn't until she secretly overheard an argument between her mother and father that she came to understand why she'd been so upset to see her father dancing with and running off with so many other women. Her father was cheating on her mother, and as she grew older she realized it equated to something akin to a compulsion for him. However, with him being her beloved father, it colored her perception of males from then on.
It was while walking through Death City with her father that her interest in entering the DWMA appeared. It was in seeing a young boy with blue hair who was about her age practicing martial arts. She had wondered why he could be in the DWMA when she wasn't allowed to be there yet, and her father had explained that he was an orphan that the DWMA had taken in. The last of a clan of assassins that had been wiped out. That would be the first time she saw Black Star, though she wouldn't meet him then, as her worried father quickly ushered her away - worried because his Maka was too young to idolize any males other than him!
When Maka was finally old enough to enter the DWMA, she chose to take the route of a Meister. She wanted to be strong and capable, just like her mother. She wanted to be a Scythe Meister, and she wanted to make that Scythe into a Death Scythe better than her cheating papa. then she met him; Soul Eater, previous Soul Evans of the Evans musical family. He stood out from all the other weapons to her, not only because he was a Scythe weapon, but because of how he held himself. She observed him for a while before approaching him. When she did, she was sure that he was the one she was looking for. He would be the scythe she could trust to be her partner.
The first time they spoke Soul took her into a shop with a piano and told her to listen to the song he played, that it would be his introduction. The song was dark and slightly eerie, but Maka found she liked it, and liked the kind of person it spoke of Soul being. Soul was different from her, but the way she saw it, he was different in all the ways that counted. It was a difference that she could see would compliment her, just as she would compliment him. From that day on, they became a team, and as a team they left their family homes to live together as all Weapon and Meister pairings did.
Together, Maka and Soul held one goal in common; make Soul a Death Scythe. And together, they proved to be quite a force to be reckoned with. To make Soul a Death Scythe they needed to collect ninety-nine kishin tainted souls off of Lord death's list and then one Witches soul. The combination would end in the creation of a Death Scythe, giving the Weapon the boost in power that they needed. However, only the Weapon could eat the souls, and only the souls of those on Lord Death's 'List', to take any human soul not on the list is a grievous crime that would lead down the road to becoming a kishin, and therefore appearing on Lord Death's list.
At the tender age of twelve Maka and Soul had been on the verge of making history; not only making Soul a Death Scythe, but doing so at the youngest age the DWMA had ever seen. Maka was seen as something of a protégé, due to her mother and father, as well as because of her studious ways. So it was hardly a shock when she and Soul managed to collect ninety-nine kishin tainted souls. However, a mistake was made and instead of going after a witch for her soul, they ended up taking one of the nine souls of a highly magical cat named Blair, who had a human appearance.
Blair, having taken a liking to them, particularly Soul, followed them home like a stray cat and ended up becoming their pet, even though her seductress and promiscuous ways causes Maka some irritation throughout. Still, when not being promiscuous, Blair is often seen riding around on Maka's shoulder in cat form with her little witches hat on.
Since they failed in collecting a witches soul, all the kishin tainted souls were confiscated from Soul and they had to start over.
It was after this that specific events began to take place that would set the tone for their future. Having known Black Star for years now, Black Star and Soul got along famously and were close friends, while Black Star's Weapon, Tsubaki, was who Maka was close to out of the pair. It wouldn't be until the times to come that the two groups really became close. A catalyst formed by the appearance of Lord Death's 'son', Death the Kid. A Shinigami like his father, Kid truly had no need to join the DWMA. However, when he witnessed a remedial lesson Maka, Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki had to take in which it looked like their deaths were imminent, he told his father to enroll him and his weapons, the Thompson sisters Liz and Patty, and left to save them. And while he never made it to save them, he still entered the DWMA as a student, therefore meeting the group and becoming one of their number.
Maka would be the first to say that her group of friends was a strange one. Only herself and Tsubaki were the most normal and down to earth members of it, but she wouldn't have it any other way. She would take each and every one of them as they came, because their individual quirks were what made their time together special and unique. No, Maka wouldn't change a thing about any of them, though she might say how she wishes Black Star would calm down or that Kid would be less neurotic.
Then she met the Demon Sword Meister, Crona, and her/his demon sword, Radnarok. Another meeting that would be a catalyst for the time to come. A kid around her age, Maka was shocked by her/his demeanor. So nervous and tortured, having been merged with a melted down Ragnarok and Black Blood from a young age, it obviously had taken an ill effect on the person. However, she could not abide by the human souls Crona and Ragnarok had taken. However, the Black Blood and abilities of Crona and Ragnarok were too great and Maka for the second time - after her remedial lesson with Dr. Stein, her teacher - she became paralyzed by fear. What was worse for her was the fact that she couldn't defend or attack with soul in Scythe form, because the sound vibrations from Ragnarok caused Soul a great deal of harm, and she did not want to see him hurt. She tried to escape, but failed to do so in time and was about to take a direct blow from Ragnarok when Soul took his human form back at the last moment and protected Maka with his body.
That moment had been the most horrifying moment for Maka, to see he partner bleeding out because he protected her. Thankfully Dr. Stein along with her papa arrived and took over the fight. They not only drove Crona and Ragnarok off, but found out the existence of a very powerful Witch; Medusa. With Dr. Stein having applied first aid in the field, they were able to save Soul and get him back to the DWMA for surgery, though he was laid up for days afterward, recovering. It was in blood tests after the fight that it became known that some of Ragnarok's Black Blood had entered Soul's blood stream, and it would only be a matter of time before they knew how it would affect him.
After this happened, Maka was faced with her insecurities, and as any young teenager, she floundered in finding the proper way to handle them. It began with declaring she would become stronger in order to protect her weapon so that he would never be harmed again like this. However, she did not know that Soul had come to the same conclusion. It would be Dr. Stein that, eventually, would set them on the right path that would save their partnership, and the unwitting help of an immortal werewolf with stolen magical powers. That and a good lecture from one Tsubaki. Maka realized her fault, and she corrected her stance. She didn't want to become stronger than Soul, she wanted to become stronger with Soul. Together.
It is after this fight that an inkling of the changes to come in their partnership would begin as Maka coughs up Black Blood after resonating her soul wavelength with Soul's. However, it is also after this that their abilities as a Meister-Weapon pair begin to really grown, as well as Maka's own personal abilities; such as her Soul Perception and Anti-Demon Wavelength.
Due to Dr. Stein having figured out that a witch had infiltrated the DWMA, it was only a matter of time until it was found out that said witch was Medusa, which left Maka feeling a keen sense of betrayal. Medusa, using Soul Protect - a magical ability Witches created to hide from those Meister's like Maka with Soul Perception and Shinigami's - had been masquerading as the school nurse, and had been seeing to Soul's recovery, and had been a person whom Maka had gone to for counsel. While instead she had created the Black Blood now in Soul, and the Meister and Weapon that had inflicted the almost mortal wound upon Soul. This all happened during the Foundation Day Eve, a night of celebration in the DWMA. A night that changed all their lives.
With a small group, Medusa trapped the majority of the DWMA and proceeded to descend into the bowels of the school where unknown until now the first kishin, Asura, had been imprisoned and sleeping. However, due to the quick thinking of Sid and his ability, he was able to get Maka, Soul, Black Star, Tsubaki, Kid, the Thompson sisters and Dr. Stein out of the way of the magical trap being sprung, leaving them to the task of stopping Medusa's plan to inject the kishin Asura with Black Blood and reviving him.
In pursuit of them, they find that obstacles lay in their way, starting with Medusa. Thankfully, they meet up with Death Scythe, Maka's father, along the way. Having given chase to Medusa the moment she had fled, he had escaped the party before the magical trap had even begun to form. And so, wielded by his old and first time partner after years of separation, Death Scythe and Dr. Stein took on Medusa as Maka and the others pushed forward.
Though they had all been given orders with Black Star and Tsubaki told to fight Crona and Ragnarok, being the only ones other than himself who can inflict actual damage to him, when Maka caught up to them she ignored orders and demanded to take on Crona, seeing this as her fight, and knowing that, somehow, she would make it work. Believing in Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki had gone on to join Kid in stopping the other two of Medusa's group from reaching the kishin.
In the fight with Crona, Maka senses something that she can just barely grasp onto, but had no way of understanding. After a bit, she realizes that she can 'get to' Crona, and it isn't until the Black Blood tempts Soul to descend into Madness that she sees a way to do this. After a mental conversation and dance that, in reality, takes only a matter of seconds, it is agreed on and Soul initiates the Black Blood, which he fights for control, but which takes hold of Maka sending her spiraling down into madness.
Once the Black Blood enters her, Maka's personality and fighting style completely change, freaking out Crona and giving Maka and Soul an edge to the battle; though inside, Maka is highly embarrassed by her madness induced action. Still, she seeks out this connection she felt and follows it straight into Crona's soul.
Once in Crona's soul she comes to understand the young Meister, her perception of her/him changing drastically. Instead of defeating Crona, she now is determined to save her/him. After erasing the 'protective circle' Crona has made deep within her/him, Maka left Crona's soul and beseeched Soul to pull them both from the madness of the Black Blood. Once freed, Maka sets Soul aside and approaches Crona, who is in the middle of his body rejecting the Black Blood from the shock of Maka's erasing Crona's circle of 'safety'.
Being within Crona's soul, Maka had learned that a life without the contact and approval of others, especially Crona's own mother - who surprisingly is Medusa herself - had left Crona fearful of being touched and accepted by others. So she embraced Crona, encouraged her/him, and offered Crona her friendship. And so, Maka became Crona's first friend, which at first infuriates Crona's Weapon, Ragnarok, who begins to bully and beat on Crona by emerging from within Crona's body. Saying that she/he had this, and would handle it, Crona urged Maka and Soul on. Even though Maka was a bit doubtful that Crona really had a handle on her/his weapon, she in the end went on because it was imperative that Medusa's minions were stopped.
However, it would all be in vein. While they arrived in time, it ended with Medusa's gang successful as the lot of them were attacked by hallucination caused by Asura's madness wavelength. Reborn, it was obvious none of them were on par with the kishin, and he managed to not only escape them, but Lord Death himself after the magical trap faded, releasing the rest of the DWMA, though this is only because Lord Death was anchored to Death City and was incapable of leaving it in pursuit of Asura.
Maka would learn much after this, like the fact that the kishin Asura had been among the eight warlords that had served Lord Death back in the Dark Ages. But he had been so full of fear and mistrustful that he not only swallowed his weapon whole, having not trusted it, he had also begun taking human souls not on Lord Death's list in order to become more powerful so he wouldn't need to fear anymore. This was how he, in the end, became a kishin. At the time, Lord Death had hunted him down and tore his skin from Asura's body and used it as a sack to encase Asura's soul in, imprisoning him deep in the earth, after which he built the DWMA on and anchored his soul over the sprouting Death City in order to keep watch over Asura.
Asura, though, proved his cowardice in running away and hiding where the DWMA could not find at first. however, despite this, a respite is had as Crona adjusts to life in Death City as a student, and without Medusa as she is killed on Foundation Eve. Or believed to have been. Life does not stay this way, though, as a new enemy arises for Maka and her friends, lured in by the madness unleashed with Asura's escape.
The witch Arachne is reborn into the world, and her massive organization called Arachnophobia starts to move, collecting Demon Tools created by the once powerful Ebion, a very powerful Mage from the Dark Ages. As with all other enemies, Maka, Soul and the others arose to the occasion, and Maka used their appearance to grow as a Meister. though it was easy to see that her friends were struggling with many things themselves. Crona was taken, which upset Maka a great deal. Dr. Stein was fitting his natural inclination for madness, aided with the presence of the Death Weapon, Marie, who naturally calms the madness in people around her just by her presence. Black Star was struggling with finding his path and avoiding the demonic path his own father had taken. And Kid... Kid had a whole slew of problems Maka couldn't begin to guess at, but she knew had to be serious. All she could do was try to be there for them all, Soul included. But it was hard as Dr. Stein was accused of murdering a DWMA Internal Investigation Officer, and set off with Marie to prove his innocence, making two people gone from Maka's side. And then Black Star and Tsubaki left the school so Black star could find his own path. It was a struggle for Maka, but she found strength as more students began playing a more active role in her life. They did not take the place of others who were so important to her, but it did her good to not feel so alone.
But as the time to take on Arachne at her base of operations, the group slowly came back together, giving Maka the courage to face what was coming, despite still being without Crona, and having to deal with Medusa who had taken over the body of a five year old girl after her body had been destroyed.
An intense battle took place within Baba Yaga's castle, Arachne's headquarters. An intense battle that pushed everyone to their limits and revealed as many answers as it created even more questions for the DWMA. However, through an expanded ability of Maka's soul perception and Soul's ability to broadcast soul wavelengths through sound, they were able to destroy Arachne as well as dampen the affect her madness was having upon the members of the DWMA. This gave Maka and Soul the soul of a witch, which was taken into the safe keeping of Lord Death until Maka and Soul reached their ninety-nine kishin tainted soul count.
In the downtime after that, everyone involved began to train hard, creating a special group that would be called the Spartoi, a group of elite students that by the end would reach Two and Three star ratings where normal students were only at a One Star rating. And in doing this Maka managed to achieve her goal, making Soul a Death Scythe. But while this goal was achieved, there was still much they had left to do. They had to find Soul's new levels and abilities and master them, including using Maka's Grigori Soul to gain the ability of flight; done through riding Soul much like a witch would ride a broom.
This time is cut short as two things happen; a new enemy shows his face, called Noah, and the continued search for Crona, who is who had been taken by Medusa. Split down the middle with attention going to both Noah and to Crona, the DWMA and Spartoi move to take care of things, with Kid taking on a more active role as a Shinigami. However Maka at the time found it virtually impossible to give her complete attention to Noah, pulled in the direction of Crona, needing to find her friend and save her/him.
However, in the end Maka was pulled toward Noah in order to save Kid who was kidnapped by the mysterious man who turns out to be a representation of the being called Ebion from 800 years ago. Entering into the Book of Ebion, Maka and the others advance through the chapters, themed after the Seven Deadly Sins, in pursuit of Kid. through this Maka learned much about herself, and once again had her partnership and relationship with Soul reaffirmed and solidified, though at great price. Once leaving the book, Maka and the others enter right into the middle of a battle against Noah and his monsters, one of them being Justin, one of Death's on Death Weapons who had betrayed Lord Death and the DWMA in order to pursue the kishin Asura as his new God to serve.
Though Maka and Soul could not fight Noah themselves due to their injuries, they were able to act as support by using Chain Resonance to support Black Star and Kid as they used their new abilities gained through madness. Thus they were able to destroy Noah, though one of his minions managed to escape with the Book of Ebion.
Maka became concerned as, after the destruction of Noah, Soul's scar began to ache, the scar given to him by Crona. Then, finally, Maka and Spartoi receive a break as Crona reappears, though it is with sadness that Maka arrived in Moscow only to find that Crona had killed the Russian Death Weapon and his Meister, encasing their souls in madness tainted balls of Black Blood. When Maka used Soul and Majin Hunt to try breaking open the spheres of Black Blood Soul become mad from it. Maka never doubted in Soul's ability to come back to her, though. They had grown strong together, and she knew that Soul would never allow the Black Blood and Madness to take complete control over him.
however, having Soul back from madness is short lived as they find out Crona had struck at a town in the Ukraine, making Maka even more sad and confused as her hatred for Medusa grows.
Then a nasty shock comes in the form of Lord Death putting Crona on his 'List', a fact told to Maka by Kid to Maka and Spartoi, though he goes on to say that they should not take it as a strict order and to act as they see fit with Crona. Maka is torn by this, as her whole life has been guided by the laws of Lord Death, and to disobey a direct order like this? But this is Crona, her dear friend whom she felt she was the only one capable of saving her/him.
While this news almost divides the Spartoi, which concerns Maka a great deal, they are not given long to mull over it. Soon Maka, through a complete accident, manages to locate the kishin Asura while searching for Crona using her Web Soul Perception through Soul; on the Moon. A fact that explained why the Madness was stronger in higher altitudes, and confirmed by the Intel of another Death Weapon Meister.
The DWMA began to move and make preparations for the battle with the kishin, but Maka was distracted from it, and rightly so. She knew that destroying the kishin was important, but all she could think about was Crona and getting to her friend, saving her/him. She just couldn't leave Crona alone. But knowing this about her, Lord Death assigned her and the Spartoi the task of going after Crona while assigning Kid to the Kishin Suppression Unit as a Shinigami Representative, since Lord Death could not leave Death City.
It is clear from the moment Maka set eyes on Crona that Medusa had done a number on her friend, descending Crona into a level of madness she/he hadn't reached the first time Maka had saved her/him. and even Ragnarok was different, no longer acting out as a separate entity and bullying Crona. More powerful, and more mad, even having largely forgotten Maka, Crona resisted Maka's attempts at reaching her/him. It cut Maka deep to witness this, but she stayed strong. She would save Crona, she was determined to.
However, because Maka and Soul were not going to kill Crona, and neither was Black Star and the others, Crona was able to escape, flying toward the Moon, where the Kishin was, intent on devouring the Kishin Asura.
Maka wanted to take off after Crona, but she knew there was protocol to adhere to. So they, the Spartoi, conferred and decided that the majority of their number would return to Death City and report in, but Maka, Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki would join the fight on the Moon in pursuit of Crona. Before leaving, headbands were passed out with the symbol of a soul adorning the black bands, acting as a connection between them and their comrades as they separated. A symbol of being connected even as they parted. But that was not all. As the others left, Tsubaki retrieved a bag packed at Maka's behest before they left to find Crona, Maka having known this moment would come. Stripping off the Spartoi uniforms, Maka, Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki took on their old uniforms as they knew that they could not follow the orders of the Spartoi to destroy Crona. they had their own path to walk now, but still they wore the bands connecting them to the others.
Once on the Moon, Maka and Black Star joined the other Death Weapons and Meisters in fighting off the Clowns of Madness that were the Kishin's monsters, fueled by the madness of the kishin. An army that regenerated endlessly with the power of madness Asura gave off in endless waves. But not beign as run down as the others now were, Maka and Black Star, with Soul and Tsubaki, gave them the time needed to wait until an alliance with the Witches could be struck, and their magic used to prevent the Clowns of Madness from regenerating.
As the witches came through with their end of the bargain, Kid returned with the members of the Spartoi. Quickly the Clowns were destroyed, proving no real match against the Death Weapons, their Meisters, and the Spartoi members.
Then a new battle started as Asura arose from the depths of the Moon, in a fight with a new representation of Noah. A fight that was short lived as Crona came upon them and swallowed both into his Black Blood. She/He spit Noah back out, claiming not to want him, while dissolving Asura into his body, therefore swallowing the Kishin.
In the battle that followed it became known to all that the madness in Crona had been risen to new levels after Crona killed her/his own mother, Medusa. Using the magic of the Immortal Werewolf, Free, those with weaker wills and minds were transported back to Earth, which accidentally included Kid and the Thompson sisters.
On the Moon, Maka and Soul along with Black Star and Tsubaki took to fighting the more powerful and mad Crona. Determined to get to her friend, Maka kept trying while fighting, forever wanting just to save her friend, not end her/him. During this fight Crona was able to unsynchronize Maka and Black Star with their weapons, separating them in the middle of battle. However, Death Scythe manages to get to the area of battle, showing that parent and child hold a bond that nothing can shake, allowing Maka to wield her father in Death Scythe form. This causes Crona to become unstable as she/he obsesses over the face he/she had killed her/his own mother, which in turn allows Asura to take possession and swallow up Crona.
When Kid arrives onto the scene again, and now being able to use Soul again, they maneuvered the battle; fighting furiously and looking for a way to reach Crona inside of Asura and save her/him. In the process Maka got to watch Kid become a true Shinigami, encouraging him the entire time after Kid finds out that Asura is, actually, his older brother and a piece of Lord Death as he himself is. At first Maka watched Kid as he feared becoming a kishin like Asura, but with Black Star she is able to convince him that he is different and will be a Shinigami like Lord Death. After he came into his True Shinigami form they - with help from those on Earth's surface - were able to give Maka and Soul the opening they needed. And so Maka and Soul were able to enter into Asura to find Crona.
From that point on Maka and Soul fought from the inside. It took a great deal to get through to Crona, but finally Maka was able to. The relief that washed through her to be able to grasp Crona and fight her/his madness and stabilize his soul once more. However, it is not to be a perfect ending, for Crona decided to make the ultimate sacrifice to redeem his soul; taking on Asura and swallowing him, and the moon, up in a massive sphere of Black Blood. A sacrifice that would imprison Asura, and leave Crona and Ragnarok trapped as well. Maka did not like this and tried to get Crona to leave, but with a smile Crona told her that this was her/his way of paying for her/his crimes, being Asura's Warden. Unhappy over this Maka and Soul had no choice but to leave.
And thus the fight with Asura ended, bringing about many changes and revelations. One being that in order for Kid to become a True Shinigami his father had to die, giving up his powers in order to complete Kid's powers. The other came in the form of a Truce with Witches. Kid announced they would be allowed to walk outside of the Witches Realm without fear, and that Witch Souls would no longer be hunted; meaning that Soul was the last Death Scythe to be made. This created a new, strange world for Maka.
Growing up, Maka adored her father and idolized her mother, as it was her mother that had turned her father into a Death Scythe; at which point he had dropped his name of birth (Spirit), and became known as Death Scythe. It would be her young, essentially stay-at-home, father who would instill Maka with her love of reading. Some of Maka's fondest memories with her papa were of him reading books to her throughout her childhood. However, these memories were among the only fond ones, as she realized at a young age that her father was far from perfect.
It was as a young child of around five or six years old that she began to catch on to something being wrong. It wasn't until she secretly overheard an argument between her mother and father that she came to understand why she'd been so upset to see her father dancing with and running off with so many other women. Her father was cheating on her mother, and as she grew older she realized it equated to something akin to a compulsion for him. However, with him being her beloved father, it colored her perception of males from then on.
It was while walking through Death City with her father that her interest in entering the DWMA appeared. It was in seeing a young boy with blue hair who was about her age practicing martial arts. She had wondered why he could be in the DWMA when she wasn't allowed to be there yet, and her father had explained that he was an orphan that the DWMA had taken in. The last of a clan of assassins that had been wiped out. That would be the first time she saw Black Star, though she wouldn't meet him then, as her worried father quickly ushered her away - worried because his Maka was too young to idolize any males other than him!
When Maka was finally old enough to enter the DWMA, she chose to take the route of a Meister. She wanted to be strong and capable, just like her mother. She wanted to be a Scythe Meister, and she wanted to make that Scythe into a Death Scythe better than her cheating papa. then she met him; Soul Eater, previous Soul Evans of the Evans musical family. He stood out from all the other weapons to her, not only because he was a Scythe weapon, but because of how he held himself. She observed him for a while before approaching him. When she did, she was sure that he was the one she was looking for. He would be the scythe she could trust to be her partner.
The first time they spoke Soul took her into a shop with a piano and told her to listen to the song he played, that it would be his introduction. The song was dark and slightly eerie, but Maka found she liked it, and liked the kind of person it spoke of Soul being. Soul was different from her, but the way she saw it, he was different in all the ways that counted. It was a difference that she could see would compliment her, just as she would compliment him. From that day on, they became a team, and as a team they left their family homes to live together as all Weapon and Meister pairings did.
Together, Maka and Soul held one goal in common; make Soul a Death Scythe. And together, they proved to be quite a force to be reckoned with. To make Soul a Death Scythe they needed to collect ninety-nine kishin tainted souls off of Lord death's list and then one Witches soul. The combination would end in the creation of a Death Scythe, giving the Weapon the boost in power that they needed. However, only the Weapon could eat the souls, and only the souls of those on Lord Death's 'List', to take any human soul not on the list is a grievous crime that would lead down the road to becoming a kishin, and therefore appearing on Lord Death's list.
At the tender age of twelve Maka and Soul had been on the verge of making history; not only making Soul a Death Scythe, but doing so at the youngest age the DWMA had ever seen. Maka was seen as something of a protégé, due to her mother and father, as well as because of her studious ways. So it was hardly a shock when she and Soul managed to collect ninety-nine kishin tainted souls. However, a mistake was made and instead of going after a witch for her soul, they ended up taking one of the nine souls of a highly magical cat named Blair, who had a human appearance.
Blair, having taken a liking to them, particularly Soul, followed them home like a stray cat and ended up becoming their pet, even though her seductress and promiscuous ways causes Maka some irritation throughout. Still, when not being promiscuous, Blair is often seen riding around on Maka's shoulder in cat form with her little witches hat on.
Since they failed in collecting a witches soul, all the kishin tainted souls were confiscated from Soul and they had to start over.
It was after this that specific events began to take place that would set the tone for their future. Having known Black Star for years now, Black Star and Soul got along famously and were close friends, while Black Star's Weapon, Tsubaki, was who Maka was close to out of the pair. It wouldn't be until the times to come that the two groups really became close. A catalyst formed by the appearance of Lord Death's 'son', Death the Kid. A Shinigami like his father, Kid truly had no need to join the DWMA. However, when he witnessed a remedial lesson Maka, Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki had to take in which it looked like their deaths were imminent, he told his father to enroll him and his weapons, the Thompson sisters Liz and Patty, and left to save them. And while he never made it to save them, he still entered the DWMA as a student, therefore meeting the group and becoming one of their number.
Maka would be the first to say that her group of friends was a strange one. Only herself and Tsubaki were the most normal and down to earth members of it, but she wouldn't have it any other way. She would take each and every one of them as they came, because their individual quirks were what made their time together special and unique. No, Maka wouldn't change a thing about any of them, though she might say how she wishes Black Star would calm down or that Kid would be less neurotic.
Then she met the Demon Sword Meister, Crona, and her/his demon sword, Radnarok. Another meeting that would be a catalyst for the time to come. A kid around her age, Maka was shocked by her/his demeanor. So nervous and tortured, having been merged with a melted down Ragnarok and Black Blood from a young age, it obviously had taken an ill effect on the person. However, she could not abide by the human souls Crona and Ragnarok had taken. However, the Black Blood and abilities of Crona and Ragnarok were too great and Maka for the second time - after her remedial lesson with Dr. Stein, her teacher - she became paralyzed by fear. What was worse for her was the fact that she couldn't defend or attack with soul in Scythe form, because the sound vibrations from Ragnarok caused Soul a great deal of harm, and she did not want to see him hurt. She tried to escape, but failed to do so in time and was about to take a direct blow from Ragnarok when Soul took his human form back at the last moment and protected Maka with his body.
That moment had been the most horrifying moment for Maka, to see he partner bleeding out because he protected her. Thankfully Dr. Stein along with her papa arrived and took over the fight. They not only drove Crona and Ragnarok off, but found out the existence of a very powerful Witch; Medusa. With Dr. Stein having applied first aid in the field, they were able to save Soul and get him back to the DWMA for surgery, though he was laid up for days afterward, recovering. It was in blood tests after the fight that it became known that some of Ragnarok's Black Blood had entered Soul's blood stream, and it would only be a matter of time before they knew how it would affect him.
After this happened, Maka was faced with her insecurities, and as any young teenager, she floundered in finding the proper way to handle them. It began with declaring she would become stronger in order to protect her weapon so that he would never be harmed again like this. However, she did not know that Soul had come to the same conclusion. It would be Dr. Stein that, eventually, would set them on the right path that would save their partnership, and the unwitting help of an immortal werewolf with stolen magical powers. That and a good lecture from one Tsubaki. Maka realized her fault, and she corrected her stance. She didn't want to become stronger than Soul, she wanted to become stronger with Soul. Together.
It is after this fight that an inkling of the changes to come in their partnership would begin as Maka coughs up Black Blood after resonating her soul wavelength with Soul's. However, it is also after this that their abilities as a Meister-Weapon pair begin to really grown, as well as Maka's own personal abilities; such as her Soul Perception and Anti-Demon Wavelength.
Due to Dr. Stein having figured out that a witch had infiltrated the DWMA, it was only a matter of time until it was found out that said witch was Medusa, which left Maka feeling a keen sense of betrayal. Medusa, using Soul Protect - a magical ability Witches created to hide from those Meister's like Maka with Soul Perception and Shinigami's - had been masquerading as the school nurse, and had been seeing to Soul's recovery, and had been a person whom Maka had gone to for counsel. While instead she had created the Black Blood now in Soul, and the Meister and Weapon that had inflicted the almost mortal wound upon Soul. This all happened during the Foundation Day Eve, a night of celebration in the DWMA. A night that changed all their lives.
With a small group, Medusa trapped the majority of the DWMA and proceeded to descend into the bowels of the school where unknown until now the first kishin, Asura, had been imprisoned and sleeping. However, due to the quick thinking of Sid and his ability, he was able to get Maka, Soul, Black Star, Tsubaki, Kid, the Thompson sisters and Dr. Stein out of the way of the magical trap being sprung, leaving them to the task of stopping Medusa's plan to inject the kishin Asura with Black Blood and reviving him.
In pursuit of them, they find that obstacles lay in their way, starting with Medusa. Thankfully, they meet up with Death Scythe, Maka's father, along the way. Having given chase to Medusa the moment she had fled, he had escaped the party before the magical trap had even begun to form. And so, wielded by his old and first time partner after years of separation, Death Scythe and Dr. Stein took on Medusa as Maka and the others pushed forward.
Though they had all been given orders with Black Star and Tsubaki told to fight Crona and Ragnarok, being the only ones other than himself who can inflict actual damage to him, when Maka caught up to them she ignored orders and demanded to take on Crona, seeing this as her fight, and knowing that, somehow, she would make it work. Believing in Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki had gone on to join Kid in stopping the other two of Medusa's group from reaching the kishin.
In the fight with Crona, Maka senses something that she can just barely grasp onto, but had no way of understanding. After a bit, she realizes that she can 'get to' Crona, and it isn't until the Black Blood tempts Soul to descend into Madness that she sees a way to do this. After a mental conversation and dance that, in reality, takes only a matter of seconds, it is agreed on and Soul initiates the Black Blood, which he fights for control, but which takes hold of Maka sending her spiraling down into madness.
Once the Black Blood enters her, Maka's personality and fighting style completely change, freaking out Crona and giving Maka and Soul an edge to the battle; though inside, Maka is highly embarrassed by her madness induced action. Still, she seeks out this connection she felt and follows it straight into Crona's soul.
Once in Crona's soul she comes to understand the young Meister, her perception of her/him changing drastically. Instead of defeating Crona, she now is determined to save her/him. After erasing the 'protective circle' Crona has made deep within her/him, Maka left Crona's soul and beseeched Soul to pull them both from the madness of the Black Blood. Once freed, Maka sets Soul aside and approaches Crona, who is in the middle of his body rejecting the Black Blood from the shock of Maka's erasing Crona's circle of 'safety'.
Being within Crona's soul, Maka had learned that a life without the contact and approval of others, especially Crona's own mother - who surprisingly is Medusa herself - had left Crona fearful of being touched and accepted by others. So she embraced Crona, encouraged her/him, and offered Crona her friendship. And so, Maka became Crona's first friend, which at first infuriates Crona's Weapon, Ragnarok, who begins to bully and beat on Crona by emerging from within Crona's body. Saying that she/he had this, and would handle it, Crona urged Maka and Soul on. Even though Maka was a bit doubtful that Crona really had a handle on her/his weapon, she in the end went on because it was imperative that Medusa's minions were stopped.
However, it would all be in vein. While they arrived in time, it ended with Medusa's gang successful as the lot of them were attacked by hallucination caused by Asura's madness wavelength. Reborn, it was obvious none of them were on par with the kishin, and he managed to not only escape them, but Lord Death himself after the magical trap faded, releasing the rest of the DWMA, though this is only because Lord Death was anchored to Death City and was incapable of leaving it in pursuit of Asura.
Maka would learn much after this, like the fact that the kishin Asura had been among the eight warlords that had served Lord Death back in the Dark Ages. But he had been so full of fear and mistrustful that he not only swallowed his weapon whole, having not trusted it, he had also begun taking human souls not on Lord Death's list in order to become more powerful so he wouldn't need to fear anymore. This was how he, in the end, became a kishin. At the time, Lord Death had hunted him down and tore his skin from Asura's body and used it as a sack to encase Asura's soul in, imprisoning him deep in the earth, after which he built the DWMA on and anchored his soul over the sprouting Death City in order to keep watch over Asura.
Asura, though, proved his cowardice in running away and hiding where the DWMA could not find at first. however, despite this, a respite is had as Crona adjusts to life in Death City as a student, and without Medusa as she is killed on Foundation Eve. Or believed to have been. Life does not stay this way, though, as a new enemy arises for Maka and her friends, lured in by the madness unleashed with Asura's escape.
The witch Arachne is reborn into the world, and her massive organization called Arachnophobia starts to move, collecting Demon Tools created by the once powerful Ebion, a very powerful Mage from the Dark Ages. As with all other enemies, Maka, Soul and the others arose to the occasion, and Maka used their appearance to grow as a Meister. though it was easy to see that her friends were struggling with many things themselves. Crona was taken, which upset Maka a great deal. Dr. Stein was fitting his natural inclination for madness, aided with the presence of the Death Weapon, Marie, who naturally calms the madness in people around her just by her presence. Black Star was struggling with finding his path and avoiding the demonic path his own father had taken. And Kid... Kid had a whole slew of problems Maka couldn't begin to guess at, but she knew had to be serious. All she could do was try to be there for them all, Soul included. But it was hard as Dr. Stein was accused of murdering a DWMA Internal Investigation Officer, and set off with Marie to prove his innocence, making two people gone from Maka's side. And then Black Star and Tsubaki left the school so Black star could find his own path. It was a struggle for Maka, but she found strength as more students began playing a more active role in her life. They did not take the place of others who were so important to her, but it did her good to not feel so alone.
But as the time to take on Arachne at her base of operations, the group slowly came back together, giving Maka the courage to face what was coming, despite still being without Crona, and having to deal with Medusa who had taken over the body of a five year old girl after her body had been destroyed.
An intense battle took place within Baba Yaga's castle, Arachne's headquarters. An intense battle that pushed everyone to their limits and revealed as many answers as it created even more questions for the DWMA. However, through an expanded ability of Maka's soul perception and Soul's ability to broadcast soul wavelengths through sound, they were able to destroy Arachne as well as dampen the affect her madness was having upon the members of the DWMA. This gave Maka and Soul the soul of a witch, which was taken into the safe keeping of Lord Death until Maka and Soul reached their ninety-nine kishin tainted soul count.
In the downtime after that, everyone involved began to train hard, creating a special group that would be called the Spartoi, a group of elite students that by the end would reach Two and Three star ratings where normal students were only at a One Star rating. And in doing this Maka managed to achieve her goal, making Soul a Death Scythe. But while this goal was achieved, there was still much they had left to do. They had to find Soul's new levels and abilities and master them, including using Maka's Grigori Soul to gain the ability of flight; done through riding Soul much like a witch would ride a broom.
This time is cut short as two things happen; a new enemy shows his face, called Noah, and the continued search for Crona, who is who had been taken by Medusa. Split down the middle with attention going to both Noah and to Crona, the DWMA and Spartoi move to take care of things, with Kid taking on a more active role as a Shinigami. However Maka at the time found it virtually impossible to give her complete attention to Noah, pulled in the direction of Crona, needing to find her friend and save her/him.
However, in the end Maka was pulled toward Noah in order to save Kid who was kidnapped by the mysterious man who turns out to be a representation of the being called Ebion from 800 years ago. Entering into the Book of Ebion, Maka and the others advance through the chapters, themed after the Seven Deadly Sins, in pursuit of Kid. through this Maka learned much about herself, and once again had her partnership and relationship with Soul reaffirmed and solidified, though at great price. Once leaving the book, Maka and the others enter right into the middle of a battle against Noah and his monsters, one of them being Justin, one of Death's on Death Weapons who had betrayed Lord Death and the DWMA in order to pursue the kishin Asura as his new God to serve.
Though Maka and Soul could not fight Noah themselves due to their injuries, they were able to act as support by using Chain Resonance to support Black Star and Kid as they used their new abilities gained through madness. Thus they were able to destroy Noah, though one of his minions managed to escape with the Book of Ebion.
Maka became concerned as, after the destruction of Noah, Soul's scar began to ache, the scar given to him by Crona. Then, finally, Maka and Spartoi receive a break as Crona reappears, though it is with sadness that Maka arrived in Moscow only to find that Crona had killed the Russian Death Weapon and his Meister, encasing their souls in madness tainted balls of Black Blood. When Maka used Soul and Majin Hunt to try breaking open the spheres of Black Blood Soul become mad from it. Maka never doubted in Soul's ability to come back to her, though. They had grown strong together, and she knew that Soul would never allow the Black Blood and Madness to take complete control over him.
however, having Soul back from madness is short lived as they find out Crona had struck at a town in the Ukraine, making Maka even more sad and confused as her hatred for Medusa grows.
Then a nasty shock comes in the form of Lord Death putting Crona on his 'List', a fact told to Maka by Kid to Maka and Spartoi, though he goes on to say that they should not take it as a strict order and to act as they see fit with Crona. Maka is torn by this, as her whole life has been guided by the laws of Lord Death, and to disobey a direct order like this? But this is Crona, her dear friend whom she felt she was the only one capable of saving her/him.

Using the magic of the Immortal Werewolf, Free, those with weaker wills and minds were transported back to Earth, which accidentally included Kid and the Thompson sisters.
On the Moon, Maka and Soul along with Black Star and Tsubaki took to fighting the more powerful and mad Crona. Determined to get to her friend, Maka kept trying while fighting, forever wanting just to save her friend, not end her/him. During this fight Crona was able to unsynchronize Maka and Black Star with their weapons, separating them in the middle of battle. However, Death Scythe manages to get to the area of battle, showing that parent and child hold a bond that nothing can shake, allowing Maka to wield her father in Death Scythe form. This causes Crona to become unstable as she/he obsesses over the face he/she had killed her/his own mother, which in turn allows Asura to take possession and swallow up Crona.
When Kid arrives onto the scene again, and now being able to use Soul again, they maneuvered the battle; fighting furiously and looking for a way to reach Crona inside of Asura and save her/him. In the process Maka got to watch Kid become a true Shinigami, encouraging him the entire time after Kid finds out that Asura is, actually, his older brother and a piece of Lord Death as he himself is. At first Maka watched Kid as he feared becoming a kishin like Asura, but with Black Star she is able to convince him that he is different and will be a Shinigami like Lord Death. After he came into his True Shinigami form they - with help from those on Earth's surface - were able to give Maka and Soul the opening they needed. And so Maka and Soul were able to enter into Asura to find Crona.
From that point on Maka and Soul fought from the inside. It took a great deal to get through to Crona, but finally Maka was able to. The relief that washed through her to be able to grasp Crona and fight her/his madness and stabilize his soul once more. However, it is not to be a perfect ending, for Crona decided to make the ultimate sacrifice to redeem his soul; taking on Asura and swallowing him, and the moon, up in a massive sphere of Black Blood. A sacrifice that would imprison Asura, and leave Crona and Ragnarok trapped as well. Maka did not like this and tried to get Crona to leave, but with a smile Crona told her that this was her/his way of paying for her/his crimes, being Asura's Warden. Unhappy over this Maka and Soul had no choice but to leave.
And thus the fight with Asura ended, bringing about many changes and revelations. One being that in order for Kid to become a True Shinigami his father had to die, giving up his powers in order to complete Kid's powers. The other came in the form of a Truce with Witches. Kid announced they would be allowed to walk outside of the Witches Realm without fear, and that Witch Souls would no longer be hunted; meaning that Soul was the last Death Scythe to be made. This created a new, strange world for Maka.
ABILITIES
PHYSICAL: Athletic. She is flexible and agile. She also possesses upper body strength in her wiry muscles build due to using a scythe. She is also proficent in hand-to-hand combat.
SOUL PERCEPTION: The ability to see a persons soul and read it, seeing the personality of the person in it. She is also able to gauge their spiritual strength. Using this ability, she is also able to tell the difference between humans and witches, as well as between a normal human and a human corrupted by the kishin (evil and madness). She is able to sense people nearby by their souls, even if they are hidden and disguised. She can also recognize people she knows by sensing their souls.
ANTI-DEMON WAVELENGTH: Maka's soul has a naturally occurring anit-demon wavelength, which acts as a protection against the influences of darkness and insanity. This naturally occurring ability she has can also be used in her attacks, making her attacks highly effective against witches and those with kishin infected souls. She can also resonate with the souls of others through physical touch and restore the sanity of those about to be pulled into madness.
BLACK BLOOD: Through contact with her weapon, Soul, she is able to utilize the Black Blood he holds. While the Black Blood directly injected into her pulls her briefly into madness, when experiencing it through Soul she is able to keep her sanity (aided by her anti-demon wavelength). The Black Blood manifests as a black dress that protects her body from physical attack.
GRIGORI SOUL: This is a rare type of soul that has wings which enable the meister who has it to fly. However Maka's ability to access this ability lies in utilizing it in sync with her weapon, Soul, while he is in weapon form.
WEAPON GENE: Due to being the child of a Meister and a Death Scythe, Maka has the weapon gene. She is able to manifest blades upon her body; multiple blades of varying sizes. She is fully capable of using them in battle and is quite a force to be reckoned with. However, she prefers to fight her her weapon partner, Soul, as her weapon ability takes a lot out of her and requires a great deal of focus.
SOUL RESONANCE TECHNIQUES: Witch-Hunt Slash, Majin Hunt, Kishin Hunt.
MAKA CHOP: When annoyed, Maka has a tendency to use the nearest book as a weapon and hit the annoyance at the top of the head. She calls it her 'Maka Chop'. It typically gets used on Soul and Black Star.
